2009 TcSUH Student Travel Awards Allow Participation at Major Conferences
The Texas Center for Superconductivity at the University of Houston is pleased to announce twelve recipients of 2008-2009 TcSUH Student Travel Awards.
All students in the TcSUH research program are eligible to submit applications for the awards, which are selected three times per year by a faculty committee. The student must present research results at a U.S. or international conference or workshop, with added weight given to students selected for oral presentations. A stipend of $500 to $1000 is provided to offset registration fees and travel expenses. Presenting research at major conferences and meetings affords students an opportunity to discuss their work with peers and senior researchers, meet U.S. and international researchers from other universities, national laboratories and industry, and improve their skills in successfully communicating their research results.
The following students received travel awards for the 2008-2009 academic period.
Ms. Dana-Elena Gheorghe (Arnold Guloy Group) delivered an oral presentation of her research results on "Synthesis, structure and properties of organic-based metal halide perovskites of mixed-valent gold (I, III)" at the 2008 American Chemical Society (ACS) 235th National Meeting in New Orleans, LA. Ms. Gheorghe previously won 3rd prize at the TCSUH Student Symposium in May 2006. She currently serves as the Chair of the Women Chemist Committee for the American Chemical Society- Greater Houston Section.
Ms. Chau Nguyen (James Meen Group) presented her research results at the 2008 Applied Superconductivity Conference (ASC) in Chicago, IL, on "Phase relations in the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu and Bi-Sr-Ru oxide systems."
Mr. Rajit P. Chaudhury (Paul Chu Group) gave an oral presentation, "Reentrant spiral magnetic order and ferroelectricity in Mn1-xFexWO4," at the 53rd Annual Magnetism and Magnetic Materials Conference (2008) held in Austin, TX. Mr. Chaudhury also won 1st prize at the TCSUH Student Symposium in December 2007.
Three students made oral presentations of their research results at the 2009 March Meeting of the American Physical Society (APS) in Pittsburgh, PA. Mr. Xiang Hu, (C. S. Ting Group) recipient of the 3rd place prize at the Fall 2008 TcSUH Student Symposium, presented his research results on "Quasi-particle properties in iron-based superconductors." Ms. Priya V. Chinta (Wei-Kan Chu Group) presented her results on "Weak localization effects in Al-doped ZnO films." Mr. Omar Lonzano (Wei-Kan Chu Group) also presented his results on "Transport properties of transparent conducting thin film Nb:In2O3." Mr. Lozano won 3rd prize in the December 2006 TcSUH Student Symposium.
Mr. Shuangqi Song (Li Sun Group) presented a poster on "Surface-Functionalization of Carbon Nanofiber Sheets by Electrochemical Synthesis for Large-scale Engineering Applications" at the 2009 NSF Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation Grantees and Research Conference, held in June 2009 in Honolulu, HI.
Mr. Bing Lv (Arnold Guloy Group) gave an oral presentation, "Synthesis, structures and properties of FeAs-based superconductors," at the 238th American Chemical Society National Meeting & Exposition, held August 2009 in Washington, D.C. Mr. Lv also won 1st prize in the December 2008 TcSUH Student Symposium.
Mr. Zulfiqar Chikani (Jarek Wosik Group) will present his research, "Radio-frequency heating of single-walled carbon nanotubes and gold nanoparticles for hyperthermia of cancer cells," at the 2009 Materials Research Society (MRS) Fall Meeting in Boston, MA. Ms. Divya Padmaraj (John H. Miller Group) will also present her research at MRS, "Biosensor for dielectric spectroscopy of mitochondria and for monitoring ion activities". Ms. Padmaraj won 1st prize in the May 2007 TcSUH Student Symposium.
Mr. Nilanjan Das (Paul Chu, PI) was selected to give an oral presentation of his research, "Electric Field Induced Resistive Switch in Transition Metal Oxides," at the IEEE 2009 10th Annual Non Volatile Memory Technology Symposium, to be held in October 2009 in Portland, OR. Mr. Das won 2nd prize in the May 2008 TcSUH Student Symposium.
Ms. Melissa Gooch (Paul Chu, PI) will present her research, "Magnetic Quantum Critical Point and Scaling in the Iron Pnictide Superconductor KxSr1-xFe2As2," at the 11th Joint MMM-Intermag Conference, to be held January 18-22, 2010 in Washington, D.C.. Ms. Gooch won 1st prize in the May 2009 TcSUH Student Symposium.
